The CBP Form 5106 is the form used to create or update an importer's identification in CBP's systems. In essence, the 5106 establishes the importer/customs relationship and should only need to be filed once. Historically, just a business name, address, and Employer Identification Number (EIN) would have been sufficient to submit a 5106. In cases where an importer does not have an EIN or SSN, such as a foreign entity, CBP will issue a unique CBP Assigned Number.
However, in early 2019, CBP deployed a new 5106 that included additional information, such as estimated entries per year, the importer's participation in CTPAT or ISA, the phone number and email address of the importer, and a host of optional information that will help reduce the risk of an examination or expedite the payment of a refund.
